Pay and productivity: a retail industry taskforce

Event starts:

Thursday 28 January 2016 | Venue Houses of Parliament, Room TBC

The Fabian Society, JRF and the Trust for London are establishing a year-long taskforce charged with findings ways to improve productivity and pay in the UK retail industry.

The retail industry is the largest private sector employer in the UK with a workforce of around 3 million people. However, the industry has amongst the lowest levels of productivity in Europe and a high incidence of low pay.

As retailers consider how they will adapt to the imminent rollout of the National Living Wage, the taskforce will gather the evidence before outlining strategies for employers, unions and government to boost productivity and pay in the sector.

This event will mark the launch of the taskforce. We will be joined by members of the taskforce, including:

Norman Pickavance (Taskforce chair and former Group HR and Communications Director of Morrisons)

Nita Clarke (Director, Involvement and Participation Association)

John Hannett (General Secretary, Usdaw)

Daniel Johnson (Managing Director, Studio One and Paper Tiger Group)

Jill Rubery (Professor of Comparative Employment Systems, University of Manchester)

Fiona Wilson (Head of Research and Economics, Usdaw)
