Denham examines public attitudes to poverty and inequality PDF Print E-mail

John Denham MP is today leading a panel discussion examining the implications of public attitudes towards inequality as revealed by new research. Read the speech below.

With the credit crunch seeming to shake many people’s tendency to justify existing inequalities as fair – shattering long-held assumptions about pay and tax – what is the British public’s attitude now towards poverty and inequality?

Research carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Fabian Society looked at some of the underlying ‘drivers’ of public attitudes to inequality and welfare.

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will discuss the implications the research findings will have for politicians, policy-makers, anti-poverty campaigners and the British public as a whole.

John Denham will be joined by: Tim Horton (Research Director of the Fabian Society); Dalia Ben Galim (Acting Head of Social Policy of ippr); and Geoff Mulgan (Director of The Young Foundation).
