The Fabian Society Internship Programme
big-benInternships at the Fabian Society can give you an idea of typical day in and around Westminster. Some days you may get to sit in on a meeting with a Minister, others may include setting up events or the more mundane administrative tasks. Some days may start with a breakfast discussion about education policy, others may finish at an evening debate.

At any one time, the Fabian Society has four or five interns, who generally work two-three days per week. We ask for a commitment of three months. Interns are based in our offices just off Parliament Square, close to the Houses of Parliament.

Interns are an invaluable part of the organisation and, as far as possible, are given a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities to undertake. Many people find it a useful first step into the political world and an opportunity to find out more about how Westminster operates. You may get the chance to attend high-level events or briefings by government ministers. While interns do provide considerable administrative assistance to the society, they also have the opportunity to gain experience in press strategy, research, conference and events management and fundraising. We try to ensure that interns are given an opportunity to get involved in the specific area(s) which most interest them. The Fabian Society has a Facebook group where you can find out more about its activities and interact with other Fabian members.

The interns posts are voluntary, although London zones 1-6 travel expenses and a lunch allowance of £5 per day are paid. Interns must be committed to the aims and values of the Fabian Society.

Fabian internships can be a useful way of finding out more about the political world, and many use them as stepping stones to gaining jobs in the sector. Ex-Fabian interns can be found working in think-tanks, government departments, for MPs and as government researchers.
